We will enjoy a range (http://xkcd.com/485/) of interactive science activities. We will set up an inflatable 10 ft x 6 ft pool with 6 inches of oobleck (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4xkvCcAers&t=0m20s), a non-Newtonian fluid. To make 30 cubic feet of oobleck (about 1 pound of cornstarch per cup of water) we will need about 900 pounds of corn starch. Corn starch is non-toxic and biodegradable. We could also protect an SP subwoofer then drop the bass and watch the oobleck dance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoB0pM2VASg&t=0m08s). After the event, we can let the water dry off then dispose of the corn starch in the dumpster. We will serve liquid nitrogen ice cream at the event. Last August, we planned an event with liquid nitrogen ice cream - though the liquid nitrogen did not arrive in time, we now know from whom we can borrow clean PPE, dewars, and a cryogenic hose, as well as how to register the event with SAO and MIT EHS. We will host the event in several months and hope to incorporate other cool suggestions. Other ideas include a quadcopter obstacle course, and an invitation to oneTesla (https://onetesla.com/), recently founded by a couple of MIT students, to demo their DIY Tesla coil with MIDI controller. We image this event will be of great interest to the MIT graduate community - perhaps we could extend the event and apply to GSC or ASA/LEF.
Budget. The budget total comes to $1200.
