SP Orientation 2018

Welcome Desk

During the last week of August, the hall council hosted a welcome desk for new residents. Volunteers staffed the desk to answer questions and provide essentials like soap and sponges to help make the move-in process easier. New for this year, the plants chair provided mini succulents to brighten residents’ rooms. The welcome desk was so successful that we ran out of items!

Orientation Dance Party (8/31)

People were having food and making new friends under the tent in the first SP orientation event: the Dance Party! A lot of fruits, chocolates, snacks, shrimp cocktail were offered during the party! In the SP yard, we had an awesome DJ and a great dance floor. People danced and made new friends! There was a photo booth during the event so that you can take fun photos with your friends!

Orientation Brunch (9/2)

SP Orientation Brunch took two days of preparation, and Helpers were the backbone of this event. You can see our Helpers, sporting their new red aprons, which are an annual tradition for the SP Orientation Brunch. SP Orientation Brunch played host to ~400 members of the MIT community. Crowd control is a crucial component for smooth functioning of the event – servers played a key role to swiftly feeding all our hungry guests.

What was on the menu? Pancakes, French toast, bacon, roasted potatoes, meatballs, eggs, beans, matcha lattes, fruits, pastries, and the list goes on, and on, and on! Yes we managed to eat all 40 lbs of bacon and 110 lbs of potatoes we made!

Orientation BBQ (9/8)

This was one of the largest orientation events at SP. We grilled burgers and hot dogs for more than 500 MIT graduate students. In addition, we had a collection of deep-fried meat, drinks, and desserts. There were also a lot of fun games offered, such as bubbles, beach balls, ladder-toss, and croquet! This year Tim the Beaver is busy. Nevertheless, we have a new friend, Kumamon, in the event! Finally, we had a huge screen on the north side wall of the building where we showed a movie later that evening.
